Design for manufacture
— DATE
05.06.2022
For this task, I was required to purchase and then redesign a handheld digital thermometer using its existing internal components.
It was a difficult yet incredibly beneficial task as it replicated the real-world scenario where predefined components need to be housed in a useable, manufacturable form, accurately defined by the size of the existing componentry.
The Design
The main objective for the design was that it was to be manufactured from injected moulded plastic and incorporate electronic circuitry and components.
The selected thermometer had to be rebranded to Spin Digital – a fictitious electronics company. The final assembled product had to also be small and fit within a box with dimensions no longer than 200mm and dimensions X + Y + Z equal to more than 100mm and less than 300mm.
It also had to be made using the ‘clamshell’ principle, where two injection moulded components are screwed together to form a hollow assembly.
The model was created using the Solidworks software.
The original purchased digital infrared thermometer vs. the rebranded and redesigned Spin Digital thermometer.
